Meet the Winners: Building Climate Solutions for Chile’s COMUNIDAD Geospatial Hackathon

After weeks of creative problem-solving and collaboration, the first COMUNIDAD Geospatial Hackathon for Chilean Patagonia concluded with three outstanding teams standing out for their innovation, scientific rigour, and social impact. Their projects demonstrate how open satellite data, artificial intelligence, and local knowledge can come together to strengthen climate resilience and sustainable resource management in Chile.

First Place – COIPO (Universidad de Santiago de Chile)

Challenge: Hackea tu Terruño
Representing the Universidad de Santiago de Chile, the team COIPO took home first place for their proposal addressing the environmental impact of salmon farming in Aysén’s fjords. Their project envisions a public environmental observatory that integrates satellite monitoring and open data to track pollution, algal blooms, and other ecological changes in near real-time. Beyond technology, COIPO’s solution empowers citizens, local authorities, and NGOs with transparent access to environmental information — promoting accountability, community engagement, and informed decision-making.
This initiative embodies the Hackathon’s core mission: to make satellite data usable for everyone, supporting sustainable management of natural resources through accessible, open, and collaborative platforms.

Second Place – CryoScope (Universidad San Sebastián)

Challenge: IceEnd Hack
The CryoScope team from Universidad San Sebastián developed an interactive platform called Cryoscope Chika Chika, integrating science, culture, and community engagement. Their project focuses on glacier monitoring and early warning systems for the Aysén region, combining simulation modules, educational tools, and real-time visualisations. By connecting satellite observations with cultural narratives, CryoScope aims to make climate science accessible and relatable to local communities.
Their approach highlights how technology can also serve as a bridge between data and awareness — making environmental change visible and understandable to citizens, educators, and decision-makers alike.

Third Place – PatagonIA (Universidad Católica del Norte)

Challenge: IceEnd Hack

In third place, PatagonIA impressed the jury with Patg-Ice, a software solution designed to monitor potential overflow risks in Laguna San Rafael using satellite imagery and AI. The tool provides tailored visualisations for scientists, tourists, and local communities, supporting early planning and risk management in one of Patagonia’s most iconic glacial landscapes. By combining Sentinel data with user-focused design, PatagonIA demonstrated how advanced technology can produce practical, real-world applications for safety and conservation in vulnerable environments.

Celebrating Collaboration and Impact

The jury, composed of experts in innovation, technology, and environmental science, evaluated the projects based on their creativity, use of data, social and environmental relevance, and clarity of communication. Each winning team stood out for transforming complex geospatial information into actionable insights for climate adaptation and sustainable land management.

The hackathon’s success also reflects the strength of collaboration between academic institutions, public agencies, and civil society. This included support from mentors, as well as the Universidad de Aysén and the COMUNIDAD Project coordination team.

Innovation with Purpose

The winners of the COMUNIDAD Hackathon proved that technological innovation can thrive when guided by a sense of responsibility toward the environment. Their work sets an example for how open data and geospatial intelligence can drive meaningful change. Each prototype developed during the hackathon contributes to a growing regional ecosystem of digital innovation.

Conoce a los Ganadores: Construyendo Soluciones Climáticas en el Hackathon Geoespacial COMUNIDAD de Chile

Tras semanas de resolución creativa de problemas y colaboración, el primer Hackathon Geoespacial COMUNIDAD para la Patagonia Chilena concluyó con tres equipos destacados por su innovación, rigor científico e impacto social. Sus proyectos demuestran cómo los datos satelitales abiertos, la inteligencia artificial y el conocimiento local pueden unirse para fortalecer la resiliencia climática y la gestión sostenible de recursos en Chile.

Primer Lugar – COIPO (Universidad de Santiago de Chile)

Desafío: Hackea tu Terruño

Representando a la Universidad de Santiago de Chile, el equipo COIPO obtuvo el primer lugar con una propuesta que aborda el impacto ambiental de la salmonicultura en los fiordos de Aysén. Su proyecto propone un observatorio ambiental público que integra monitoreo satelital y datos abiertos para rastrear contaminación, floraciones algales y otros cambios ecológicos en tiempo casi real.
Más allá de la tecnología, la solución de COIPO empodera a ciudadanos, autoridades locales y ONG con acceso transparente a información ambiental, promoviendo la rendición de cuentas, la participación comunitaria y la toma de decisiones informada.

Esta iniciativa encarna la misión central del hackathon: hacer que los datos satelitales sean utilizables por todos, apoyando la gestión sostenible de los recursos naturales mediante plataformas accesibles, abiertas y colaborativas.

Segundo Lugar – CryoScope (Universidad San Sebastián)

Desafío: IceEnd Hack

El equipo CryoScope, de la Universidad San Sebastián, desarrolló una plataforma interactiva llamada Cryoscope Chika Chika, que integra ciencia, cultura y participación comunitaria. Su proyecto se centra en el monitoreo glaciar y sistemas de alerta temprana para la región de Aysén, combinando módulos de simulación, herramientas educativas y visualizaciones en tiempo real.
Al conectar observaciones satelitales con narrativas culturales, CryoScope busca hacer que la ciencia climática sea accesible y significativa para las comunidades locales. Su enfoque demuestra cómo la tecnología puede servir como un puente entre los datos y la conciencia ambiental.

Tercer Lugar – PatagonIA (Universidad Católica del Norte)

Desafío: IceEnd Hack

En tercer lugar, el equipo PatagonIA impresionó al jurado con Patg-Ice, una solución de software diseñada para monitorear riesgos potenciales de desbordamiento en la Laguna San Rafael mediante imágenes satelitales e inteligencia artificial.
La herramienta ofrece visualizaciones adaptadas a científicos, turistas y comunidades locales, apoyando la planificación anticipada y la gestión de riesgos en uno de los paisajes glaciares más emblemáticos de la Patagonia.

Celebrando la colaboración y el impacto

El jurado, compuesto por expertos en innovación, tecnología y ciencias ambientales, evaluó los proyectos según su creatividad, uso de datos, relevancia social y ambiental y claridad comunicativa.
Cada equipo ganador destacó por transformar información geoespacial compleja en conocimientos aplicables para la adaptación climática y la gestión sostenible del territorio.

El éxito del hackathon también refleja la fortaleza de la colaboración entre instituciones académicas, agencias públicas y la sociedad civil, con el apoyo de mentores y del equipo coordinador del Proyecto COMUNIDAD y la Universidad de Aysén.

Innovación con propósito

Los ganadores del Hackathon COMUNIDAD demostraron que la innovación tecnológica prospera cuando está guiada por la responsabilidad ambiental. Sus trabajos ejemplifican cómo los datos abiertos y la inteligencia geoespacial pueden impulsar cambios significativos. Cada prototipo desarrollado durante el hackatón contribuye al crecimiento del ecosistema regional de innovación digital.
