The 6th International Multidisciplinary Conference for Young Researchers (MCYR 2025) took place on 9-10 October 2025 at the Czech University of Life Sciences Prague, bringing together over 200 early-career scientists from across the world for two days of open dialogue, interdisciplinary exchange, and collective reflection. This year’s theme, “Science and Innovation: Advancing the Path to a Sustainable Future,” is strongly aligned with the mission of the COMUNIDAD project, which focuses on applying AI, geospatial intelligence, and digital tools to strengthen environmental resilience and support data-driven decision-making in vulnerable regions.

Geospatial Intelligence and Community Resilience in Focus: Keynote Reflections

A major highlight of MCYR 2025 was the opening session, featuring a keynote by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hynek Roubík, Director of the BioResources and Technology Division (BRT) and Dean of the Faculty of Tropical AgriSciences (FTZ) at the Czech University of Life Sciences Prague (CZU), a partner institution within the COMUNIDAD consortium, where he also leads WP5 and WP6. In his address, he presented the COMUNIDAD project, outlining its mission in Chile and Colombia, its potential for broader implementation across CELAC countries, and the crucial role of geospatial data and AI-driven tools in strengthening environmental resilience and supporting evidence-based community decision-making. His keynote also explored the evolving landscape of scientific innovation and the responsibility of young researchers to engage with real-world challenges through collaboration, ethics, and purpose-driven research.

A Space for Learning, Dialogue, and Collaboration

MCYR 2025 featured five scientific sessions: Climate & Sustainability, Technology & Innovation, Plants & Agriculture, Animals & Ecology, and Society & Culture, creating a dynamic space for early-career researchers to present novel findings and explore new interdisciplinary connections.

Informal networking moments, including the evening barbecue and bonfire, offered opportunities for participants to form meaningful connections across disciplines and institutions, strengthening the collaborative spirit that underpins both MCYR and the COMUNIDAD project.

Celebrating Excellence

MCYR 2025 was highlighted with various awards ceremony recognising exceptional contributions in both oral and poster sessions. The winners were acknowledged for their clarity, creativity, and scientific impact, embodying the values of innovation and collaboration championed by both MCYR and COMUNIDAD.

As part of COMUNIDAD’s involvement in the conference, the MCYR 2025 Storytelling Competition – “Your Research, Your Story” invited participants to reimagine their abstracts through compelling narratives connected to digital innovation, geospatial insights, and community resilience.

In the COMUNIDAD category, Anxhela Hameti was recognised for her outstanding submission, “Exploring Land Use Changes in Albanian Coastal Wetlands Through Remote Sensing.” Her narrative illustrates how satellite data and geospatial analysis can reveal environmental change, support conservation actions, and guide community-level decision-making, bringing COMUNIDAD’s mission to life through storytelling and scientific creativity.

Conference Outputs and Open Resources

In support of open knowledge and accessible learning, principles deeply aligned with COMUNIDAD’s focus on community-centred digital transformation, MCYR 2025 has made its official Book of Abstracts (ISBN) publicly available. The publication captures the diversity, creativity, and scientific rigour of the research showcased at this year's event.
